I don’t see how any scientist could pick any option but to release the vote counts. It just isn’t right to publish your results but then declare that no one can ever see the raw data!

That is precisely the argument against touch-screen voting machines, and one of the reasons why that type of voting machine is banned in New Hampshire.
The vote counts aren’t the raw data: That would be the ballets.
I picked “Cruel and Unusual”.
But only because I went out of my way to vote multiple times for Lunar Laser Ranging on your “Cool Laser Applications” Poll.
Now I’m sad.
I think it totally depends on the context. Elections for public office of course. You have to release all the vote totals.
Listing the results in say elections for homecoming queen where you have no control over your nomination in high school is cruel and unusual. In some attempt to do try and make high school more fair, all student groups got to nominate someone for homecoming queen. Without my consent, I became the debate team nominee for homecoming queen. I was not allowed to drop out and I really don’t want to know how much I lost by. I’m not sure I even voted for myself.
Things like condo board and nonprofit boards where its a miracle if you have actual competition is a gray area.
