Via Arcane Gazebo, a pointer to the Blender list of “The 500 Greatest Songs Since You Were Born.” At least, it was a pointer to that article last night– all Blender links seem to be 404ing this morning, which also means I can’t discuss the songs in detail.
That’s fine, actually, as the list is very rap-centric, and thus I don’t really recognize a lot of the Top 50. That’s probably a fair reflection of modern pop music, which just drives home the degree to which I’m out of touch.
My real purpose in posting is to grumble about the fact that the starting date for the list is 1980. Which means the presumptive birth date for people reading stuff on the web is now nine years after my own birth date.

While you’re all complaining about the starting date, I’m going to complain that “Hit Me Baby One More Time” is up at #9. Before “You Shook Me All Night Long.” Before anything by, say, R.E.M. (who doesn’t get on until #79, with “Losing My Religion”). And “Two Princes” isn’t even on the list. Pshaw!
I would’ve commented more on the list, but it was 404ing when I went to write the post. The songs I recognize are a weird mix of big hits and album tracks. I’m sort of puzzled to see “I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man” as the top Prince song, for example– though it might be my favorite track of his, it wasn’t a big hit back in the day.
It’s like they couldn’t make up their minds whether they wanted to be writing about pop songs, or be record-store dorks pushing obscure stuff you’ve never heard.

I am four years younger then when this stupid list starts, and I guess I barely know half of these songs. Maybe its just that i grew up listening to way to many of my parents old 60’s and 70’s records, but there is far too much 2000-2006 rap on that list. Also isn’t 500 songs a bit long, why not 12 or 24 depending on the number you could put on a disc. They could at least sell that, sheesh.
Ha, CCP, definitely didn’t notice. I suppose I don’t mind whitey-whitewhite scatting as much as the next guy.
