Pop Culture Interlude

1) I see that as a SF fan with a blog, I am contractually obligated to say something about Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog. Enh. It’s well-done, but I’m not that much of a Whedon fanboy, and the hapless villain conceit isn’t enough to get past the fact that I don’t really like musicals.

2) The Watchmen trailer is, indeed, quite pretty, though in the manner of trailers these days, it’s edited in such a way that you can’t tell what the hell is going on. They’ve got the look down, though.

3) If you were subpoenaed in Texas, why on Earth would they sequester you in Memphis?

  1. Similarly, why would someone end up in Folsom [CA] State Prison if he shot a man in Reno, NV? I think DeLong asked this once on his blog.

  2. Actually, almost every scene from Watchmen is from the comic. I am sort of conflicted, it looks very faithful but who cares? What percentage of the general public knows or even cares what a Watchman is? It may turn out to be a great movie for a fan and everyone else will be going…I don’t understand what just happened. Sort of like the Dune movie, if you read the book it made sense, if you didn’t it was a big mess.

  3. Joss’s stuff is not everyone’s taste I suppose… But I love it. Everything he writes has deeper drama/emotion/meaning than appears on the surface… but when he really gets his way, that surface (the setting and mode of storytelling) can be pretty random. The dude is a genius IMO. Remember Shakespeare even got pretty random at times too.
