Skot Kurruk explains the Best Picture result (below the fold, for those with sensitive ears):
In the end, after all the talk of whether or not Hollywood (and, by laughable extension, our whole beknighted country) was ready to fully laud a film where rabbit-eyed cowboy Jake Gyllenhall happily takes it up the ass . . . the answer was a clear “Nope.” We just weren’t ready.
I haven’t seen the film, but all the footage I’ve seen seems to have them herding sheep…so why does everybody keep calling them cowboys? Are there cattle in bits outside the trailers and commercials?
This is perhaps the only year where I’ve seen every film nominated for Best Picture. Brokeback is a worthy contender, but honestly, I felt both Crash and Capote to be the two real choices for Best Picture. They’re better pictures than Ang’s. Personally, I wanted Capote to win, but it was enough to see Hoffman get recognized for his work in it.
