I’ve mentioned in a few places that SteelyKid frequently comes home from school/ camp/ day care singing garbled versions of current pop hits. So for the first time since about 1990, I added a Top 40 station to my car radio presets, so I would know what she was actually trying to sing. This leads to a bunch of seat-dancing and sing-along in the back seat as I drive her to taekwondo and so on, so I give you three of the songs that she’s grooving two these days:
First up, we have:
My first reaction to hearing that was “Hey, it’s great that Morris Day is getting work…” But, you know, I enjoyed the Time, so: cool. I actually bought this record. Next, we have:
SteelyKid really likes the chorus of this. And, you know, it’s okay. A few bad echoes of the really unfortunate rap-rock heyday of the early 2000s, but nothing too traumatic.
Finally,
Sigh. Just, sigh.
What you don’t like Fireball! Dance I say dance!
The Time, ha. Hey, Jerome. Bruno Mars would have been at home in the 1980s, or the 1970s for that matter.
Hah! Bruno Mars is one of the few pop singers who actually has variety in his song styles. And the only way I tolerate Fireball is to say to myself it’s the Tequila! do today.
I’m okay with “Fireball” musically, but the lyrical content isn’t quite what I want SteelyKid picking up at this point. “Uptown Funk” isn’t exactly perfect, either, but it’s a better tune, so I’ll forgive it.
Regarding lyrical content:
You should watch the CBS Sunday Morning featurette about a guy’s kids asking about “daytime drinking” and other common themes in the country music they were listening to. Worth pondering. They really do pick it up.
