"[T]here’s been a fascinating exchange in blogland between Tenured Radical and Dr. Crazy. Both addressed the ways that budget issues are being discussed at their respective colleges. Stipulating upfront that neither was really arguing with the other, and that they’re working at two very different kinds of institutions, they really staked out two very distinctive positions."

"I wrote a post about Directly Down Wind Faster Than The Wind (DWFTTW) vehicles. At the time of this post, there are 37 comments for the original post. That is way more than I expected. This is very popular topic. Clearly, it brings a lot attention to Dot Physics. The first question – is this the kind of attention a naked person running through campus gets or is it a different kind of attention? I really don’t mind either way."

Next up in the Lord of the Rings re-read is chapter two of Fellowship, “The Shadow of the Past.” This chapter is remarkable in both mechanics and content, and the post behind the jump is accordingly very long. With, as usual, spoilers.

You know, if you’re in academia and your attitude is that “it’s just a job”, I have to wonder why you are sticking it out. If what you are doing is not a calling, surely there are any number of other jobs you could be doing that offer more money and less grief.
I suspect most people in this position went to grad school aiming at bigger and better things but the best jobs they could land were teaching positions at third- or fourth-rate schools, which is settling for very little indeed.
