The great Garage Remodeling Project is slowly drawing to a close (the contractor is running way behind), but the crucial elements of the room are now in place: we can haz bookshelves:
That’s looking from the front of the room back toward Kate’s desk, but it give you the best idea of the room. The base cabinets will eventually have doors, to keep FutureBaby from getting into whatever we store in them. The front of the room, where my desk is, is dominated by windows:
You can see my workspace here, which is freakishly clean at the moment, because I haven’t been working in this room long. Over time, it will undoubtedly slip toward the chaos characteristic of academic offices…
Now we just need to fill those shelves…
ooooooooo, purty bookshelves.
“The contractor is running way behind” is probably some sort of universal constant. An explanation of it would belong in the basics of science series. Yes, we’re three months into a two month reno and nowhere near finished.
droooooool….
Where are you going to put Future Baby’s desk? And Emmy’s workspace? Poor planning on your part.
Emmy’s workspace is the _entire floor_, since her work is: (1) lying down looking sad that we aren’t petting her, (2) sitting next to us looking sad that we aren’t petting her, and (3) sleeping.
(And being petted, of course, but she doesn’t think that’s work.)

Our home is insulated with bookshelves. We will not defer to vermin defining truth and morality by convenience of the moment. That is why we also have guns.
the contractor is running way behind
As John #2 said, this situation is normal. I have had several renovation projects at my house (which is older than I am), and not one of them has ever been completed on time.
I assume there is a door in there somewhere–presumably to the right of Kate’s desk, since the bookshelves on that side appear to stop short of the back wall. (IME that is the normal location for a door into a garage.) Either that, or you’ve rigged one of those sliding bookshelf arrangements that I’ve only seen in fiction.

We have two doors, one to the right of Kate’s desk, and another on the same wall, to the left of my desk, or just off my right shoulder when I took the top picture.

Alas!
Those bookshelves are BEAUTIFUL. I’m drooling over here. The ONLY way they could be prettier is if/when they are filled with books which I haven’t read.
Well done, Chad and Kate. Reminder to empty the lower shelves when futurebaby is in crawling and grabbing stage of phase-changes, and again (higher) at walking-while-hand-on-wall-or-furniture.
I moved into the house that my wife and I own about 20 years ago, in part because of the extensive built-in floor-to-ceiling bookshelves. The hand-made tiles and bas-relief buddhas of the south fireplace helped, and the orange trees, but it was those lovely bookshelves that set my heart thumping.
I totally covet your bookshelves… especially since we’re fast running out of shelving space, ourselves
That looks unnatural! The only place I’ve ever seen bookshelves not overflowing is in furniture stores. How is it even possible to have enough shelf space? That must violate some physical law.
The books will be moved downstairs on Sunday. If Chad’s back-of-the-envelope calculation is correct, they will be pretty full at that point.
I purchased the exact same desk as Kate’s back in 1997, and my ex-wife is still using it, after moving eight times. Very durable! And I agree with the others on how nice the shelves look.
