I’m not organized enough to make this a regular feature, or to use it to divine the future, but every now and then, I get a really good run of songs on the iTunes shuffle, and make a note. Here’s a batch from this weekend (with a smattering of comments):
- “White Russian Galaxy,” The Crimea
- “Be Sweet,” The Afghan Whigs
- “Ain’t Wastin’ Time No More,” The Allman Brothers Band
- “Papa Was A Rodeo,” The Magnetic Fields (You gotta love an ambiguously gay cowboy song…)
- “Check,” Rustic Overtones
- “Right Next Door (Because of Me) (live at KBCO),” Robert Cray
- “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” Bonnie Tyler (Jim Steinman is a genius. Or maybe I’m just a child of the 80’s.)
- “The Ghost of a Smile,” Pogues
- “Good Morning Little School Girl,” Huey Lewis & The News
- “Gimme A Sign,” Ryan Adams
- “Communique,” Dire Straits (An underrated album)
- “Angel Leads Me On (live at KBCO),” Big Head Todd And The Monsters
- “Cumberland Blues,” Grateful Dead (A great band, when they play songs…)
- “My Best Friends Girl,” The Cars
- “Girl Take It Easy,” The Pietasters (The live version is better)
- “These Dreams of You,” Van Morrison
- “Fool In The Rain,” Led Zeppelin (Always reminds me of freshman year…)
- “Everytime I Look For You,” Blink-182
- “Three Easy Pieces,” Buffalo Tom
- “Peace Frog,” The Doors (“I’ve got a wah-wah pedal, and I’m not afraid to use it!”)
Oh man.
Now “whoosh goes the randomizer” no longer points to me as a google top ranked result.
Wah…

—-52 live shows and over 400 hours of audio, yeah I’m hooked.
Big Head – Strategem is a great answer
Dire Straits – Telegraph Road is a great one album side song

Yes, you are a child of the 80’s 🙂
I guess I’m just gonna have to send you some Drive By Truckers……
Maybe I’m a child of the ’80s, too, but… I’ve always thought the Bonnie Tyler version of this song was powerful. I vaguely remember another version from 1996 or so (I’ve forgotten who the singer was) done up as a dance tune. This song Does. Not. Work. as a dance tune.
It’s clear, though, that we have significantly different tastes in music. “My Best Friend’s Girl” is the only other song on that list that I recognize.
