A Hubris-Crazed Monster from the Bowels of the American Dream

Via sennoma (I’m not sure that link will work, as the server appeared to be down this morning), Hunter S. Thompson’s obituary for Nixon:

If the right people had been in charge of Nixon’s funeral, his casket would have been launched into one of those open-sewage canals that empty into the ocean just south of Los Angeles. He was a swine of a man and a jabbering dupe of a president. Nixon was so crooked that he needed servants to help him screw his pants on every morning. Even his funeral was illegal. He was queer in the deepest way. His body should have been burned in a trash bin.

You know, in a sense, Thompson was the original ranting political blogger. He had his personal problems, but his better writing was really a nice counter to the bland and mannered pablum that the mass media serve up about most issues. This piece in particular was a really refreshing contrast to all the weird haigography that got busted out after Nixon’s death. It’s nice to see it up on the Internet.

  1. It’s rather silly:

It is fitting that Richard Nixon’s final gesture to the American people was a clearly illegal series of 21 105-mm howitzer blasts that shattered the peace of a residential neighborhood and permanently disturbed many children.

I doubt even 105-mm howitzers equal the rock concerts in loudness, and most kids are no strangers to those.

Yes, but rock concerts gernerally don’t happen in the middle of residential neighbourhoods without warning. 😉
