For this week’s Toddler Blogging, a shot of Family Reading Time:
SteelyKid looks very serious, because she’s going about the important job of locating Goldbug in Richard Scarry’s Cars and Trucks and Things That Go. Grandma and Grandpa still have the copy of this that I loved when I was little, and introduced SteelyKid to it. If you’re not familiar with it, it contains lots of very busy road scenes, with lots of different types of vehicles, and each drawing includes a little gold bug somewhere– driving a bulldozer, riding in a car, hiding in a teacup. SteelyKid has really taken to the “Where’s Goldbug?” game. She’ll even grab one of our hands, move it to the appropriate point in the picture, and say “Mommy find Goldbug! Yay!”
It’s spectroscopic-grade cute, and fun for the whole family.
I’m not kidding, she saw this picture walking by your computer and said, “That’s cute.”
Finding Goldbug in that book was a fixture in my house when we were growing up. We’ve got Richard Scarry’s Best Word Book Ever, which my 20-month old son loves looking through, but there’s no Goldbug! I think that this weekend I’m finally going to have to break down and pick up Cars and Trucks and Things That Go.

I had to read that book to my son so many times I finally tape recorded myself reading it and just let him play the tape on his tape player.
Thank goodness he can read by himself now. He’s 24…
Awwwwwwwwwww.
Man, finding Goldbug was a huge part of my childhood AND Pip’s as well.
We’ve got several Richard Scarry books, my son loves them! And I did, too, when I was little, still do…
…does she laugh at the pickle car? I buy this book for every toddler I know! It was our favorite take-to-church-book (along with the cheerios!) when my boys were little.
