Tonight’s bedtime stories included two books involving flying characters: Foo, the Flying Frog of Washtub Pond<\/a> (in which the title character gets blown into the sky by a gust of wind), and The Magic Brush<\/a>. The latter is a dead-grandparent book, but ends with a cheerful picture of the kids reunited with their grandfather in their imagination, riding a flying horse. The Pip didn’t pick up on the death bit, luckily for me.<\/p>\n

“Look at them, Daddy, they’re flying!”<\/p>\n

“Yep. They’re on a flying horse.”<\/p>\n

“But why are they flying?”<\/p>\n

“Why? Well, because flying would be a lot of fun.”<\/p>\n

“I wish I could fly.”<\/p>\n

“Yeah, that would be cool.”<\/p>\n

“When a big gust of wind comes along, it’s going to blow me away up into the sky, and then I’ll be flying!”<\/p>\n

“What? I hope not!”<\/p>\n

“Why not?”<\/p>\n

“Well, if a gust of wind blew you away, I’d miss you, and be sad.”<\/p>\n

“I won’t go far away. The wind will blow me up into the sky, and I’ll be flying, but when the wind goes away, I’ll come down and land. On a farm.”<\/p>\n

“You’re going to land on a farm?”<\/p>\n

“Yeah.”<\/p>\n

“That’s a good plan. What’s going to be on this farm?”<\/p>\n

“Goats. And sheep, and cows, and horses, and pigs. And wildebeestes.”<\/p>\n

“Wildebeests?”<\/p>\n

“Yeah.”<\/p>\n

“Sounds like an interesting farm. But how will you get home from the farm?”<\/p>\n

“Well, I’ll just walk. Walk, walk walk, all the way home from the farm.” (Accompanied by walking-finger gestures.)<\/p>\n

“Okay.”<\/p>\n

“It’s a really long way from the farm, though, so I’d rather take an airplane, and fly home.”<\/p>\n

“Yeah, that makes sense.”<\/p>\n

“Fly, fly, fly, in a big gust of wind!”<\/p>\n

And then he spent a while simulating wind gusts:<\/p>\n
