Quicquid enim ex ph\u00c3\u00a6nomenis non deducitur, hypothesis vocanda est; et hypotheses seu metaphysicae, seu physicae, seu qualitatum occultarum, seu mechanicae, in philosophia experimentali locum non habent. In hac philosophia Propositiones deducuntur ex phaenomenis, et redduntur generales per inductionem.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com\/startswithabang\/2011\/09\/this_extraordinary_claim_requi.php\">Ethan<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.discovermagazine.com\/cosmicvariance\/2011\/09\/23\/faster-than-light-neutrinos\/?utm_source=feedburner&#038;utm_medium=feed&#038;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+CosmicVariance+%28Cosmic+Variance%29\">Sean<\/a> have more, of course, and as always <a href=\"http:\/\/xkcd.com\/955\/\">XKCD<\/a> is on it.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>(Translation:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>I have not as yet been able to discover the reason for these properties of gravity from phenomena, and I do not frame hypotheses. For whatever is not deduced from the phenomena must be called a hypothesis; and hypotheses, whether metaphysical or physical, or based on occult qualities, or mechanical, have no place in experimental philosophy. In this philosophy particular propositions are inferred from the phenomena, and afterwards rendered general by induction. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>(via <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/General_Scholium\">Wikipedia<\/a>, so salt as needed.)<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not trying to claim that this work is on the level of the <cite>Principia<\/cite>, or anything. Or even to make a detailed analogy between the paper and the General Scholium (which is mostly Isaac Newton being kind of pissy, in Latin).
