This is an eternal topic of discussion in undergraduate education circles, and I don&#8217;t really have a definitive answer. It&#8217;s an excellent topic for a poll, though, so here you go:<\/p>\n<p><script type=\"text\/javascript\" charset=\"utf-8\" src=\"http:\/\/static.polldaddy.com\/p\/5469861.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<noscript><a href=\"http:\/\/polldaddy.com\/poll\/5469861\/\">Which of the following courses are essential for an undergraduate degree in physics?<\/a><\/noscript><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Essential&#8221; here means &#8220;it would be kind of ridiculous to award a physics degree to a student who hadn&#8217;t had this class.&#8221; A class that is nice to have, but could be picked up in graduate school if necessary does not count as &#8220;essential&#8221; for this poll.<\/p>\n<p>PollDaddy handles multiple-selection polls badly, so please make sure to check the first answer, so I have an accurate idea of how many people have voted. I&#8217;ll let this collect data for a day or two, then make a nicer graph of the answers to post.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve tried to give a rough idea of the level of the courses asked about through the academic convention of referring to textrbooks by author name. You ought to be able to google all of these up with the name and some key words, if you don&#8217;t immediately recognize the book.
