This creates an awkward situation in the introductory  material, because it just feels wrong to use the first-person singular pronoun in an academic context. This is not a new problem for me&#8211; my advisor pointed out that the only place I used &#8220;I&#8221; in my Ph.D. thesis was in the acknowledgements&#8211; and <a href=\"http:\/\/andyxl.wordpress.com\/2011\/07\/12\/bibliography-\">other people have the same issue<\/a>, so this seems like a perfect topic for a poll:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><script type=\"text\/javascript\" charset=\"utf-8\" src=\"http:\/\/static.polldaddy.com\/p\/5434235.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<noscript><a href=\"http:\/\/polldaddy.com\/poll\/5434235\/\">When writing a single-author review article, the appropriate pronoun to use is:<\/a><\/noscript><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>I won&#8217;t promise to follow the collective wisdom of the poll respondents, but I&#8217;m interested to see what people think.
