This one was a surprise to me, so here&#8217;s a quick poll to see if my subfield of physics is really <em>that<\/em> much more collegial and ethical than the rest of science:<\/p>\n<p><script type=\"text\/javascript\" charset=\"utf-8\" src=\"http:\/\/static.polldaddy.com\/p\/4519229.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<noscript><br \/>\n\t<a href=\"http:\/\/polldaddy.com\/poll\/4519229\/\">Handing a referee report for a grant or paper off to be written by a grad student or post-doc is:<\/a><span style=\"font-size:9px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/polldaddy.com\/features-surveys\/\">customer surveys<\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<\/noscript><\/p>\n<p>Refereeing takes place via classical communications channels, so you may only choose one option.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>My experience is that while I have written referee reports that my boss didn&#8217;t want to write, it was done above-board&#8211; that is, my boss contacted the journal editor, said he was too busy to review the paper, and told him to use me as the replacement referee.
