{"id":476,"date":"2006-08-09T21:29:21","date_gmt":"2006-08-09T21:29:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com\/principles\/2006\/08\/09\/important-note-for-my-students\/"},"modified":"2006-08-09T21:29:21","modified_gmt":"2006-08-09T21:29:21","slug":"important-note-for-my-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/chadorzel.com\/principles\/2006\/08\/09\/important-note-for-my-students\/","title":{"rendered":"Important Note for My Students"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A while back, I noted that one student wrote on the all-important course evaluation form &#8220;He should wear more pink.&#8221; I&#8217;m still not sure what that meant.<\/p>\n<p>Given that the second most ridiculous comment in that class was &#8220;[<i>student name<\/i>] is the worst Warcraft player ever,&#8221; I should probably point our majors to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.twitchguru.com\/2006\/08\/08\/world_of_warcraft_players_addicted\/\">this interview with an addiction doctor<\/a> (via <a href=\"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com\/purepedantry\/2006\/08\/post_40.php\">Jake<\/a>):<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Having treated all types of addictions for more than 15 years, Orzack says there&#8217;s little difference between drug use, excessive gambling and heavy game playing. And with millions of gamers hooked on mega-popular massively multiplayer online role playing games (MMORPGs), she believes the problem is growing rapidly. In fact, Orzack says as much as 40 percent of World of Warcraft players are addicted to the game.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Got that? Computer games are evil.<\/p>\n<p>(Not that I really have a claim on the moral high ground, what with Super Tecmo Bowl having eaten a good chunk of my junior year&#8230; But, ummm&#8230; Warcraft is qualitatively different.
