I do jot down the occasional paper reference, though, so here are the things I wrote down, and the talks they were associated with. This should give you some vague idea of what the meeting was like on Monday.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>From <a href=\"http:\/\/meetings.aps.org\/Meeting\/MAR10\/Event\/116377\">Joel Moore&#8217;s talk on topological insulators<\/a>, one of the Hot New Topics in condensed matter, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/nature\/journal\/v464\/n7286\/abs\/nature08916.html\">a review in <cite>Nature<\/cite><\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>From <a href=\"http:\/\/meetings.aps.org\/Meeting\/MAR10\/Event\/116413\">Phillip Treutlein&#8217;s talk on optomechanics<\/a>, a <a href=\"http:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/1003.1126\">recent preprint on coupling atoms to mechanical oscillators<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>From <a href=\"http:\/\/meetings.aps.org\/Meeting\/MAR10\/Event\/116414\">Nathaniel Brahms&#8217;s talk on cold atoms in cavities as an analogue of optomechanical systems<\/a>, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencemag.org\/cgi\/content\/abstract\/321\/5893\/1172\">review of optomechanical results in <cite>Science<\/cite><\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>From <a href=\"http:\/\/meetings.aps.org\/Meeting\/MAR10\/Event\/116910\">James Faller&#8217;s talk on the history of lunar laser ranging<\/a>, two quotes. One, attributed to Edwin Land: &#8220;Don&#8217;t undertake a new project unless it is manifestly important and nearly impossible.&#8221; The other, which I think is his own motto as an experimentalist, was &#8220;A month or two in the lab can save you an hour in the library.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I also listened to part of a <a href=\"http:\/\/meetings.aps.org\/Meeting\/MAR10\/SessionIndex2\/?SessionEventID=127282\">historical talk about Henry Cavendish<\/a>, and a couple of <a href=\"http:\/\/meetings.aps.org\/Meeting\/MAR10\/SessionIndex2\/?SessionEventID=125216\">talks about possible materials for solar panels<\/a> before caving in to jet lag and going back to the hotel to nap.<\/p>\n<p>And that&#8217;s your snapshot of the first day of March Meeting 2010.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m terrible about taking notes on conference talks, especially when I&#8217;m jet-lagged and was sleep deprived even before I got on the plane.
