{"id":378,"date":"2006-07-10T13:50:47","date_gmt":"2006-07-10T13:50:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com\/principles\/2006\/07\/10\/its-a-birdplane\/"},"modified":"2006-07-10T13:50:47","modified_gmt":"2006-07-10T13:50:47","slug":"its-a-birdplane","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/chadorzel.com\/principles\/2006\/07\/10\/its-a-birdplane\/","title":{"rendered":"It&#8217;s a Bird-Plane!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Via <a href=\"http:\/\/enceladus.wordpress.com\/2006\/07\/10\/its-a-bird-its-a-plane-its-wait-it-is-a-plane\/\">See You at Enceladus<\/a>, a Canadian team has succeeded in making a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thestar.com\/NASApp\/cs\/ContentServer?pagename=thestar\/Layout\/Article_Type1&#038;c=Article&#038;cid=1152395411588&#038;call_pageid=968332188492&#038;StarSource=RSS\">flapping-wing airplane<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Yesterday Dr. James DeLaurier, an aeronautical engineer and professor emeritus at the University of Toronto&#8217;s Institute for Aerospace Studies, fulfilled a lifelong dream, seeing his manned mechanical flapping-wing airplane, or ornithopter, fly ? a dream first imagined by Leonardo da Vinci.<\/p>\n<p>And with the successful flight DeLaurier has been lucky enough to touch what many describe as the Holy Grail of aeronautical design, achieving a place for himself, his team of volunteers and students in aviation history. <\/p>\n<p>The flapper, as it&#8217;s affectionately known, sustained flight over about a third of a kilometre for 14 seconds at about 10:20 a.m. before being hit by a crosswind and almost flipping over, damaging the nose and front wheel on the runway at Downsview Park.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>I&#8217;m not sure what the point is, but a flapping-wing airplane (or <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ornithopter\">ornithopter<\/a>) is pretty cool.
