I&#8217;m headed to Boskone for the weekend, though, so let&#8217;s end the week on a positive note. I&#8217;m declaring this a Happy News Open Thread: if you&#8217;ve got something positive to report, leave it in the comments.<\/p>\n<p>some happy thoughts to get things started:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Two of Union&#8217;s librarians (one of whom is a regular in our lunchtime basketball games) have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ala.org\/ala\/newspresscenter\/news\/pressreleases2009\/february2009\/acrlproquest.cfm\">won an award from the American Library Association<\/a>. Congratulations, Bruce and Gail!<\/li>\n<li>One of our former students, Jason Slaunwhite &#8217;04, has defended his Ph.D. in experimental particle physics (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.slac.stanford.edu\/spires\/find\/hep\/www?r=FERMILAB-THESIS-2009-01\">Search for the Higgs boson produced in association with a W boson at CDF Run II<\/a>), and is off to CERN for a post-doc. Congratulations, Jason!<\/li>\n<li>At least one person I know who is on the academic job market has received at least one offer from at least one good school. (That ought to keep the Rumor Mill occupied&#8230;).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Has something positive happened to you or somebody you know?
