{"id":3205,"date":"2008-12-07T10:00:47","date_gmt":"2008-12-07T10:00:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com\/principles\/2008\/12\/07\/publishers-weekly-snubs-scienc\/"},"modified":"2008-12-07T10:00:47","modified_gmt":"2008-12-07T10:00:47","slug":"publishers-weekly-snubs-scienc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/chadorzel.com\/principles\/2008\/12\/07\/publishers-weekly-snubs-scienc\/","title":{"rendered":"Publishers Weekly Snubs Science"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.discovermagazine.com\/loom\/\">Carl Zimmer<\/a> sent me a message via Facebook, which made me think I might owe the <cite>New York Times<\/cite> an apology for <a href=\"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com\/principles\/2008\/12\/science_38_notable.php\">last week&#8217;s ranting<\/a>. <cite>Publishers Weekly<\/cite> has come out with their list of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.publishersweekly.com\/article\/CA6610357.html\">the best books of the year<\/a>, and they do even worse than the <cite>Times<\/cite>: not one of the 27 books in their &#8220;Nonfiction&#8221; category are about science&#8211; the closest they come is probably Gladwell&#8217;s <cite>Outliers<\/cite>.<\/p>\n<p>Better yet, in a move that will no doubt delight my colleagues here at ScienceBlogs, they have an entire category on their list for &#8220;Religion,&#8221; but no category for &#8220;Science.&#8221; Fantastic.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not quite as bothered by this one, as PW is more of a trade magazine than an intellectual journal (at least, that&#8217;s my impression), and it&#8217;s probably true that books about faith sell better than books about reason. Still, given the number of science titles published in any given year, you might think it would be worth a note. If they can make a whole category for &#8220;Religion Fiction&#8221; (one of the two books is by Anne Rice), they ought to be able to come up with at least a couple of science books that are worth a mention.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Carl Zimmer sent me a message via Facebook, which made me think I might owe the New York Times an apology for last week&#8217;s ranting.
