One quarter of a year, already. To celebrate, she shows off her developmental progress:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com\/principles\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/467\/files\/2012\/04\/i-fb73cf4f1f76c7e15cf8e75d6c21d866-sm_monkey_tug.jpg\" alt=\"i-fb73cf4f1f76c7e15cf8e75d6c21d866-sm_monkey_tug.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Within the last week or so, she&#8217;s finally grasped the idea that the larger world consists of objects that she can interact with. Just this week, she&#8217;s begun to reliably grab the hanging animals in her little play gym thing. She can even get two at once:<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com\/principles\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/467\/files\/2012\/04\/i-41fcd20ed41226a75fb9efa60ef37f73-sm_double_tug.jpg\" alt=\"i-41fcd20ed41226a75fb9efa60ef37f73-sm_double_tug.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This may not seem like that big a step to non-parents, but it&#8217;s a huge deal, because it greatly increases the length of time that she can amuse herself. I don&#8217;t need to sit there and shake the hanging monkey around&#8211; she can grab it and shake it herself.<\/p>\n<p>In principle, this frees me to do other things with my time. In practice, I sit there and watch her grab toys, because it&#8217;s so darn cute.<\/p>\n<p>(Emmy is disgusted by the whole sappy spectacle.)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s SteelyKid&#8217;s three-month birthday!
