Half will go to Yoichiro Nambu &#8220;for the discovery of the mechanism of spontaneous broken symmetry in subatomic physics,&#8221; with the other half split between Makoto Kobayahi and Toshihide Maskawa, &#8220;for the discovery of the origin of the broken symmetry which predicts the existence of at least three families of quarks in nature.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll be honest: this is far enough outside my area of physics, that I can&#8217;t say anything sensible other than &#8220;It&#8217;s a good day to be a Japanese particle theorist.&#8221; I can&#8217;t begin to explain what these guys did. The blogosphere is, however, blessed with a <a href=\"http:\/\/cosmicvariance.com\/\">plethora<\/a> of <a href=\"http:\/\/dorigo.wordpress.com\/\">particle<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/backreaction.blogspot.com\/\">physicists<\/a>, and I&#8217;m sure one of them will write something soon.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, <a href=\"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com\/principles\/2008\/09\/guess_the_nobels_win_a_prize.php#c1137981\">commenter HI wins the pool<\/a> for this year, and earns the right to at least one guest post.
