{"id":2798,"date":"2008-08-01T10:20:46","date_gmt":"2008-08-01T10:20:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com\/principles\/2008\/08\/01\/failing-schools-better-than-no\/"},"modified":"2008-08-01T10:20:46","modified_gmt":"2008-08-01T10:20:46","slug":"failing-schools-better-than-no","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/chadorzel.com\/principles\/2008\/08\/01\/failing-schools-better-than-no\/","title":{"rendered":"Failing Schools: Better Than Nothing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>You know, my opinion of &#8220;No Child Left Behind&#8221; style attempts to measure &#8220;failing&#8221; schools is as low as anybody&#8217;s, but even I think <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/pub_releases\/2008-08\/osu-ms072808.php\">this new Ohio State study sounds ridiculous<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Up to three-quarters of U.S. schools deemed failing based on achievement test scores would receive passing grades if evaluated using a less biased measure, a new study suggests.<\/p>\n<p>Ohio State University researchers developed a new method of measuring school quality based on schools&#8217; actual impact on learning &#8211; how much faster students learned during the academic year than during summer vacation when they weren&#8217;t in class.<\/p>\n<p>Using this impact measure, about three-quarters of the schools now rated as &#8220;failing&#8221; because of low test scores no longer would be considered substandard.<\/p>\n<p>That means that in these schools mislabeled as failing, students may have low achievement scores, but they are learning at a reasonable rate and they are learning substantially faster during the school year than they are during summer vacation.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In other news, people who bought lottery tickets were substantially more likely to win the lottery.<\/p>\n<p>I mean, seriously, this is a proposed standard?
