Kate and I also got engaged that September, so we started doing a bit of wedding planning.<\/p>\n<p>We decided that the most sensible thing to do would be to set the date a year and a half in the future, for just after her graduation from law school. At the time, I didn&#8217;t have any job offers yet (when I interviewed for my current job, I left Schenectady the next day, and drove to Boston for our engagement party), but I said &#8220;That should be fine&#8211; every college in America is done by June 1.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Which is how I ended up being scheduled to teach freshman mechanics two days after <a href=\"http:\/\/www.steelypips.org\/wedding\/\">our wedding<\/a>&#8212; I got hired by one of the few liberal arts schools in the nation that&#8217;s still on a trimester system. And that&#8217;s why I&#8217;m going to be spending our fourth anniversary grading student papers&#8211; tomorrow is the last day of classes.<\/p>\n<p>It was a little bit of a rough start&#8211; I was supposed to teach that Monday (but I got someone else to cover the class for me), Kate did start Bar Review class that Monday, and on Thursday we got notice that my landlord wouldn&#8217;t renew the lease in August (which wrecked our honeymoon plans).
