This is an earlier-than usual opening of the &#8220;Year&#8217;s Best&#8221; season, in which every publication in the universe produces a list of the N best Whatever of the past year, but with the Christmas shopping season now starting before Halloween, I suppose this is only to be expected.<\/p>\n<p>Amazon helpfully provides both a list of bestsellers, and an <a href=\"http:\/\/amazon.com\/gp\/feature.html\/ref=amb_link_5832972_13?ie=UTF8&#038;docId=1000158311&#038;pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&#038;pf_rd_s=center-2&#038;pf_rd_r=0S5627C63M7GV6VTTQ7T&#038;pf_rd_t=101&#038;pf_rd_p=324381701&#038;pf_rd_i=383166011\">Editor&#8217;s Picks<\/a> list of the Best Books of 2007:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><cite>A Thousand Splendid Suns<\/cite>, Khaled Hosseini<\/li>\n<li><cite>The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao<\/cite>, Junot Diaz<\/li>\n<li><cite>Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Book 7)<\/cite>, J. K. Rowling<\/li>\n<li><cite>The World Without Us<\/cite>, Alan Weisman<\/li>\n<li><cite>The Dangerous Book for Boys<\/cite>, Conn Iggulden<\/li>\n<li><cite>Heartsick<\/cite>, Chelsea Cain<\/li>\n<li><cite>Tree of Smoke: A Novel<\/cite>, Denis Johnson<\/li>\n<li><cite>A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier<\/cite>, Ishmael Beah<\/li>\n<li><cite>Better: A Surgeon&#8217;s Notes on Performance<\/cite>, Atul Gawande<\/li>\n<li><cite>I Am America (And So Can You!)<\/cite>, Stephen Colbert<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>I look at that list, and all I can say is &#8220;Wow. What a terrible list.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve read exactly one of those books. There&#8217;s one unread book that I definitely want, and one other that seems vaguely interesting, and that&#8217;s pretty much it. Their <a href=\"http:\/\/amazon.com\/gp\/feature.html\/ref=amb_link_5832602_29?ie=UTF8&#038;docId=1000158751&#038;pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&#038;pf_rd_s=left-1&#038;pf_rd_r=0S5627C63M7GV6VTTQ7T&#038;pf_rd_t=101&#038;pf_rd_p=324156301&#038;pf_rd_i=383166011\">Science Fiction and Fantasy<\/a> list isn&#8217;t a whole lot better. The <a href=\"http:\/\/amazon.com\/gp\/feature.html\/ref=amb_link_5832602_28?ie=UTF8&#038;docId=1000158741&#038;pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&#038;pf_rd_s=left-1&#038;pf_rd_r=0S5627C63M7GV6VTTQ7T&#038;pf_rd_t=101&#038;pf_rd_p=324156301&#038;pf_rd_i=383166011\">Science<\/a> picks are the best of the lists I looked at, but I&#8217;ve still only read one of the ten, and while some of the others look interesting, realistically, I probably wouldn&#8217;t get around to reading them any time soon.<\/p>\n<p>These are, of course, only the first of approximately a billion of these lists to come, but it&#8217;s got to be possible to do better.
