{"id":1840,"date":"2007-10-15T09:17:27","date_gmt":"2007-10-15T09:17:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com\/principles\/2007\/10\/15\/nondorky-poll-monkey-power\/"},"modified":"2007-10-15T09:17:27","modified_gmt":"2007-10-15T09:17:27","slug":"nondorky-poll-monkey-power","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/chadorzel.com\/principles\/2007\/10\/15\/nondorky-poll-monkey-power\/","title":{"rendered":"Non-Dorky Poll: Monkey Power!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This is the famous carving of the Three Wise Monkeys on the stable at the Nikko Tosho-gu:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com\/principles\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/467\/files\/2012\/04\/i-75765f961cdb27a03951e06677e38a04-sm_three_monkeys.jpg\" alt=\"i-75765f961cdb27a03951e06677e38a04-sm_three_monkeys.jpg\" \/>\n<\/p>\n<p>Looking at that suggests a possible question for a non-dorky poll, analogous to the dork classic &#8220;what superpower would you want?&#8221;:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>If you could go through life either seeing no evil, hearing no evil, or speaking no evil, which would you pick?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>(It&#8217;s non-dorky because it&#8217;s a question of ethics and morals, and there&#8217;s nothing dorky about ethics and morals&#8230;)<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>It would sort of depend in the mechanism by which evil went unseen or unheard&#8211; if it involved some sort of evil suppression field in your immediate vicinity, that might be the way to go. If it involved blindness or deafness, not so much.<\/p>\n<p>Without a ruling on that question, I&#8217;d have to go with &#8220;speak no evil.&#8221; Ignorance of evil is not a good thing, but controlling your own actions to prevent doing evil is an unambiguous good.
