Those of you who have contributed, thank you very much for your generosity.

We’ve still got $4,000 to go to reach the goal for the challenge, though, so there will be more than a few posts coming up to try to solicit new contributions. Today, I thought I would try to highlight a couple of the proposals in the challenge, to suggest some more concrete giving opportunities.

We’ll start close to (my) home, with “Cruise the Forest”, a proposal from Walton, NY, a district I used to play sports against in high school. The district is right on the edge of the Catskills, which offers a great opportunity for a teacher to get kids interested in the environment… Provided they have the right supplies:

I am an agriculture teacher in a small rural school in the foothills of the Catskill Mountains. As part of the curriculum, I have a wonderful 110 acres section of Bear Spring Mountain to “cruise”. I utilize this curriculum piece in 3 courses: AP Science, Environmental Science and Forestry.

I am slowly working to increase the amount of forestry equipment I have available to my students. As numbers in the program increase I am forever trying to equipment them all. I am currently seeking a field microscope, 5 hardhats, 5 compasses and a clinometer for field studies. I will utilize the requested equipment year around and it will serve approximately 100+ students.

There’s a good, solid science connection here, and this project sounds like a great opportunity for the students. They need another $300– that’s ten donations of just $30, each good for a blog post of your choice.

That’s just one of the 11 proposal left uncompleted in my challenge entry, so if you don’t like forestry, you can always pick something else…

We’re one week into the DonorsChoose challenge for this year, and readers of this blog have already contributed over $2,000 to help school teachers and students.
