{"id":1298,"date":"2007-03-30T10:54:07","date_gmt":"2007-03-30T10:54:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com\/principles\/2007\/03\/30\/pop-music-friday\/"},"modified":"2007-03-30T10:54:07","modified_gmt":"2007-03-30T10:54:07","slug":"pop-music-friday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/chadorzel.com\/principles\/2007\/03\/30\/pop-music-friday\/","title":{"rendered":"Pop Music Friday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s Friday, and the new academic term starts on Monday (I&#8217;ll be teaching at 8am&#8211; shoot me now), so it seems like a good time to try to forget about our troubles with pop music:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Onion&#8217;s AV Club has a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.avclub.com\/content\/feature\/inventory_26_songs_that_are\">list of great story songs<\/a>, topped by &#8220;A Boy Named Sue.&#8221; I was amazed to discover a year or two ago that this was actually written by Shel &#8220;Where the Sidewalk Ends&#8221; Silverstein, who also wrote a <a href=\"http:\/\/lyricsplayground.com\/alpha\/songs\/t\/thefatherofaboynamedsue.shtml\">sequel<\/a>. the world is a very strange place.<\/li>\n<li>Also on the list is Dylan&#8217;s &#8220;Lily, Rosemary, and the Jack of Hearts&#8221; off <cite>Blood on the Tracks<\/cite>. &#8220;Tangled up in Blue,&#8221; from the same record, doesn&#8217;t make the list, probably because <a href=\"http:\/\/kate-nepveu.livejournal.com\/226456.html\">nobody can figure out the story<\/a>. There are some entertaining suggestions over there, though, and more are always welcome.<\/li>\n<li><cite>Inside Higher Ed<\/cite> offers a <a href=\"http:\/\/insidehighered.com\/views\/2007\/03\/30\/musgrove\">reflection on the role of music in academic writing<\/a> which is kind of interesting. It&#8217;s not as dead-on as the third part of <a href=\"http:\/\/espn.go.com\/page2\/s\/neel\/011207.html\">Eric Neel&#8217;s tribute to the <cite>Rocky<\/cite> soundtrack<\/a>, though, which contains one of the best descriptions ever of a thesis defense.<\/li>\n<li>When it comes to pop nostalgia, it&#8217;s hard to beat Jason Hare&#8217;s weekly Chart Attack! feature, this week <a href=\"http:\/\/jasonhare.com\/2007\/03\/30\/chart-attack-25\/\">guest-hosted by jefito<\/a>. It covers the top ten from March 31, 1990, which is right about the point where the Billboard charts ceased to be relevant to me.
