This provided the opportunity to take some nicer pictures than just the obligatory hotel-window shot, so I went for a walk on the bike path by the American River. Where I saw Fire Sheep:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10275\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10275\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com\/principles\/files\/2015\/10\/fire_sheep.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com\/principles\/files\/2015\/10\/fire_sheep.jpg\" alt=\"Animal grazing fire fuel reduction in progress.\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10275\" srcset=\"http:\/\/chadorzel.com\/principles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/fire_sheep.jpg 600w, http:\/\/chadorzel.com\/principles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/fire_sheep-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10275\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Animal grazing fire fuel reduction in progress.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>OK, technically, according to the signs they had up, this is an &#8220;animal grazing fire fuel reduction&#8221; program, but I think &#8220;fire sheep&#8221; sounds cooler. There was a pretty sizable herd of sheep wandering around the side of the path, munching on the undergrowth. This particular shot was at a point where a whole bunch of them had decided to move up over a little hill, kicking up some dust that made for those cool visible sunbeams. You can also see <em>why<\/em> they&#8217;re needed, thanks to the burned tree trunk in the foreground.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m heading over to the CSU campus in a bit, and giving a colloquium talk this afternoon.
