{"id":10047,"date":"2015-05-20T08:51:05","date_gmt":"2015-05-20T12:51:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/scienceblogs.com\/principles\/?p=10047"},"modified":"2015-05-20T08:51:05","modified_gmt":"2015-05-20T12:51:05","slug":"on-toys-in-science","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/chadorzel.com\/principles\/2015\/05\/20\/on-toys-in-science\/","title":{"rendered":"On Toys in Science"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The big social media blow-up of the weekend was, at least on the science-y side of things, the whole <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.co.uk\/news\/archive\/2015-05\/18\/girls-and-their-toys-hashtag-twitter\">&#8220;boys with toys&#8221; thing<\/a>, stemming from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/2015\/05\/16\/406995846\/playing-around-with-telescopes-to-explore-secrets-of-the-universe\">this NPR interview<\/a>, which prompted the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=girlswithtoys&#038;src=typd&#038;vertical=default\">#GirlsWithToys hashtag<\/a> in response. I&#8217;m not sorry to have missed most of the original arguments while doing stuff with the kids, but the hashtag has some good stuff.<\/p>\n<p>The really unfortunate thing about this is that the point the guy was trying to make in the interview was a good one: there&#8217;s an essentially playful component to science, even at the professional level.
